Join Nastasia Y and Andrew McAnsh
for an unforgettable evening of music and cultural healing.
Experience the healing power of music through rhythm and melody while exploring ancestral songs. Andrew McAnsh will share his vast knowledge from jazz, to his Metis and Sicilian roots, to his worldly travels; while Nastasia Y will share her vast knowledge of Eastern European folk songs.
This workshop welcomes everyone—no prior music experience or knowledge of other languages required. Engage in call and response, improvisation, and discover the universal language of music with just your body and voice.
After a short break, Nastasya and Andrew will perform a set of fusion jazz, electronic elements and Slavic folk, opening the souls of their listeners to Ukrainian ancestral magic and resistance.
Nastasia Y (vocals, keyboards, loops) is a Ukrainian-born artist in Toronto combining jazz, funk, rock, indie-pop, and electronic elements with Slavic folk. Her music mirrors her journey, from being raised in Kyiv to her late father’s folk songs, to Canada’s jazz scene, to the Nastasia Y Band (formerly DoVira) fusing all her influences. Nastasia has collaborated with artists from jazz star Elizabeth Shepherd, to the folk group BLISK, to the rock legend Oleh Skrypka. Her album ‘Kyiv Soul’ (May 2024, Lulaworld records) features Grammy nominated and Juno award winning musicians, exploring themes of resistance, love, and ancestral magic, with a mission to open people’s hearts to Ukraine. Pronunciation: nas-TA-s’yah
Andrew McAnsh (trumpet, percussion, electronics) is an award-winning trumpeter/composer/educator and recent graduate of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Andrew has cemented his position as Canada’s preeminent trumpet voice, known for performing with everyone from Esperanza Spalding to most recently being the trumpeter for the Grammy-award winning drummer Larnell Lewis. Andrew’s Sicilian and Metis musical roots add a sense of global sophistication to Nastasia’s music.
